Credit card debt, interest rates and what borrowers should do right now: The news released this May that credit card debt balances were declining appeared to be positive on the surface. Certainly, a decline in what borrowers owe is preferable to a spike. But upon closer examination, this seemingly good news wasn't exactly what it appeared to be. For starters, credit card balances in the United States in the first quarter of 2025 remained very high, at a total of $1.18 trillion. While that was down $29 billion from the previous quarter, it still represented a 6% rise from the same period in 2024. And with the average credit card debt hovering close to $8,000 currently, there's likely a lot of work left for borrowers to complete to regain their financial freedom.

These 3 Bills Should Never Go on a Debit Card | Joel O'Leary, Fool. My father-in-law just booked an $8,000 vacation -- through a travel agent. (Honestly, I didn't even know travel agents still existed.) But that's not the wildest part -- he paid for the whole thing with a debit card. I know better than to tell my FIL how to handle money, so I kept my mouth shut. But on the inside I was screaming, because not only did he just forfeit hundreds of dollars in credit card rewards, but he also missed out on potential travel insurance. If anything goes wrong on the trip, there's very little recourse without insurance.

Everything to know about gold prices this June: Investors tracking the price of gold in recent years have had a lot to monitor – and for good reason. With inflation spiking to a multi-decade high in June 2022, many investors turned to gold for its safe-haven attributes and its ability to maintain value during inflationary periods. That surge in interest, in part, caused gold prices to spike. And even though inflation has since dropped significantly from that point, the price of gold remains substantially elevated, up by more than 60% since early 2024. Still, if you're looking for a reliable hedge against inflation, a smart way to diversify your portfolio and a tangible asset that you can hold, evaluate and buy and sell with ease, gold is likely the metal for you right now.
